MENTAL HEALTH
Increasing awareness and action on mental health and wellbeing
Supporting mental health and wellbeing within our company and the industry is a priority for AXIS. This commitment is reflected in our year-round internal and external programs, which include various initiatives to raise awareness and understanding of mental health as well as ensure a healthier, more engaged, and fulfilled workforce.
Within AXIS, we offer internal events focused on mental health education; strive to provide benefits globally that support our colleagues’ mental health; and support Embrace (Neurodiversity, Disabilities, and Mental Health), one of the AXIS Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).
AXIS supports Project Healthy Minds, a mental health tech non-profit. As a member of the Project Healthy Minds Corporate Coalition, AXIS sits alongside a community of forward-thinking companies that recognize the importance of investing in workforce mental health programs to ensure a healthier, more engaged, and fulfilled workforce and ultimately deliver long-term value to our colleagues, shareholders, customers, and other stakeholders.
INCLUSION
Creating a workplace rooted in the strength and uniqueness of our teammates
By actively embracing a variety of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds and ensuring equal treatment for all, we strive to make AXIS a more rewarding and inclusive place to work through a formalized approach that includes these four pillars. At AXIS, we value and actively welcome different perspectives and experiences, and we are committed to creating a culture of inclusion and belonging. We see diverse representation as a strategic imperative that is core to our business and culture. We are dedicated to fostering a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected.
Internal Education & Awareness
We offer a variety of internal education opportunities available to all teammates.
- Seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), consisting of employees from across the globe. These ERGs are instrumental in establishing meaningful programming for our teammates that promote engagement and help to build a more inclusive organization. ERGs are open to all colleagues
- Award-winning learning experiences run by teammates across the company. Learning experiences explore relevant topics in an easy-to-consume format
- An annual networking event connects leaders from across AXIS with participating teammates. Leaders speak to their career experiences and how networking and mentorship have helped facilitate their success
Recruitment & Mobility
Our recruitment strategy is multi-pronged. Knowing the strongest candidates can come through our existing teammates, we encourage employee referrals. We partner with a range of universities for recruitment, as well as several organizations through our ERG community. Finally, we encourage career mobility opportunities for existing staff.
Career Development
We are equally committed to the development and retention of our people. We provide a variety of resources to our teammates such as access to our learning and career development hub, financing for professional development opportunities, and early career networking/mentorship programs. We also offer resources to support colleagues, such as:
- Career assessment tools and guides to creating a development plan
- Menu of development programs for managers to identify opportunities to build an internal pipeline of talent
- Our annual networking and mentorship event features AXIS mentors & facilitators networking with mentees to provide career insights and guidance
- Staff-driven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) open to all colleagues including Ascent (Multigenerational), Embrace (Neurodiversity, Disabilities, and Mental Health), Ethnically Diverse Group of Employees (EDGE), Parents and Caregivers (PACE), Pride, Veterans, and Women
- Benefits such as parental leave policies and flexible work arrangements for eligible staff. Read more
- An extensive list of programs, organizations, and tools to build technical skills, network, and develop industry contacts
- AXIS teammates have access to on-demand or instructor-led virtual learning and development courses through our learning & career development hub
Voice & Advocacy
Part of creating an inclusive culture at AXIS involves advocating for change in the broader communities where we live and work. To help us accomplish this, we are partnered with organizations and causes around the world, across the insurance sector and beyond. Some of those include:
- Center for Disability Inclusion (CDI)
- The LGBTQ+ Insurance Network (LINK)
- The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network (iCAN)
- Lloyds Dive In Festival
DEI Council
Empowering our people
Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Council is comprised of almost 20 members, including the leaders of our seven ERGs, representing a range of backgrounds and geographies. The Council meets regularly to ensure continued progress against our goals and to discuss current events, challenges, and opportunities.
Employee Resource Groups
Giving a voice to our people
Our seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Ascent (Multigenerational), EDGE (Ethnically Diverse Group of Employees), Embrace (Neurodiversity, Disabilities, and Mental Health), PaCE (Parents and Caregivers), AXIS Pride (LGBTQ+), Veterans, and Women are employee-led and open to all employees. ERGs are key partners to the DEI Council in advising and participating in the recruitment, retention, and development of our colleagues. Head of Professional Lines
Part of the AXIS culture is uniting for one cause and as One AXIS and I think gathering a group to participate in a BF&M Cancer Walk is a visceral example of that. By participating in events like this, we show that AXIS is committed to helping the communities around us, which is important.

Top performing specialty insurers are buttressed by top performing talent – and elite talent is best accessed when diversity of thought, people & approach is openly embraced.

Billy
Head of Culture and Employee Experience
When I started my career in insurance, it wasn’t common for someone in the LGBTQ+ space to be open about their life. I often struggled to feel like I belonged and felt unable to contribute to my full potential. My seat at the table felt conditional, creating a sense of imposter syndrome and, like so many others, a life split between two identities – the one I brought to work and the one I lived outside of it. Now, in this new role, I feel as though I’ve come full circle. I’m excited to build on the existing momentum at AXIS and foster a genuine culture of inclusivity and belonging while helping my colleagues take advantage of all the career opportunities at hand.
